"Sheep and goats"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The theme for our Gospel text is
judgment. The universe has ended and now all people face the
judgment of God. As Jesus separates the sheep from the goats,
there is no appeals court. Those who are goats will depart from
God forever, and those who are sheep will remain with Him
forever. We need to be sure our children understand that the
difference between sheep and goats is not the actions that are
described in the text, but simply belief or unbelief. Those who
believe do good works, but these good works are the result of
their belief. They are sheep because they believe, and goats are
goats because they do not believe.
* Label cards "Sheep" and "Goat." Make enough for all the
children and make equal amounts of each. Have the children draw a
card and separate themselves into two groups of goats and sheep,
sheep on the right and goats on the left. Explain the Gospel
account of how the people are all gathered together at the end of
time and separated into these two groups. Explain about the goats
not getting eternal life in Heaven and the sheep being given
eternal life in Heaven. Now ask the goats if they know what made
them goats and let them try to answer. Then ask the sheep what
made them sheep and listen to their answers. If it is not
apparent in the answers (and it probably won't be), share with
them the good news that all who believe in Jesus are sheep. Then
let all those who believe in Jesus join the sheep.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Ask the children to tell you what a king is. List the
things they mention that make a king a king on the board or an
easel. Then apply each attribute to Jesus to show that he is
indeed our king.
