A shepherd to care for us
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of a shepherd and his sheep
(Hold up picture.) Who can tell me what this picture shows?
(Responses.) It shows a shepherd and some sheep. What is the
shepherd's job? (Responses.) The shepherd's main job is to take
care of the sheep, and he does that in lots of different ways. He
shows the sheep where to find clean water to drink when they are
thirsty. He finds good grass for the sheep to eat when they are
hungry, and he protects them and keeps them away from danger. If
one of the sheep gets lost, the shepherd's job is to go find it
and bring it safely home.
The Bible talks about shepherds in several places. Our
lesson today tells us that Jesus is our shepherd. So what does
that mean? How is Jesus our shepherd? (Get responses.) He takes
care of us, just like a shepherd here on earth takes care of his
sheep. It's funny to think of ourselves as sheep, but we are. We
need food and water to live. We need safe places to sleep and
play. We get lost sometimes and need help finding our way home.
We are just like sheep, and we need the help of a shepherd.
The shepherd takes care of each of us in different ways, but
his love for all of us is the same. God sent Jesus to die for us
on a cross so that we would be able to know God's love forever.
Our job is to get to know him better and to follow him as
faithful sheep. We need to trust that he is leading us to places
that are the best for us.
Prayer: God, thank you for giving us Jesus as our shepherd. Thank
you for leading us to springs of living water and for helping us
walk safely through places of danger. Amen.
