A small Bible
Good morning! Today I brought a Bible with me. Normally
Christians read the Bible for inspiration and information. But
sometimes people take their Bibles with them for another reason:
they want to impress others. They want others to think that they
are very religious, so they carry their Bibles everywhere they
go. There is a fancy word for people who want to use their
religion to impress others: hypocrisy. Can you say that word?
(Let them try.)
The Bible is a wonderful book, but we use it for reading, studying, learning, and finding out about Jesus. We do not use it to make others think more of us. Jesus said it like this: "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them ...." Piety is a fancy word meaning that we use our religion to make others think more of us.
Today is the first day of Lent. We call this "Ash Wednesday" because ashes are a way of showing our sorrow for our sins. Many churches place ashes upon each person's forehead to help them remember that they are saved by God's grace. Everyone can see the ashes and they are not put there to impress others or to make their religion something everyone can see.
Our religion is inside us. We can show it by what we say and do, but we do not try to make others think more of us because of our religion.
Dear God: Thank you for Jesus and this season of Lent where we can be true to you and not try to show off to others. Amen.
