Good morning, boys and girls. Today I want to talk about the kind of love that God gives to you. Did you know that God is love? (let them answer) Love is the very best way to describe God the very best way. When God adopts us as his children he does it with love, and he wants us to love others in the same way.
Most of us like to think that we are the way God wants us to be. I want to show you some pictures of people who lived in the city of New Orleans where there was a bad hurricane. (show the pictures) Many people died during the hurricane and others died in the floods that came with the hurricane.
But, most people lived through the storm. Their houses were destroyed in the winds and the floods. All of them lost their food supplies and all of their clothes and furniture. Doesn't this make you feel really sorry for them? (ask them to show you how to look when you really feel sorry for someone) Many people in our country felt sorry for them. They had nowhere to stay, some were caught on their roofs, others tried to swim to safety, and many lived in the Astrodome where there was no water to drink and not enough bathrooms or places to stay clean. Do you really feel sorry for the people? (let them answer)
Do you remember when this happened? Some people felt very sorry, but they did nothing. The Bible teaches us that feeling sorry is not good enough. As a matter of fact, the Bible tells us that if we have money, food, clothing, and other kinds of help then we should do everything we can to give them help, even if we do not know their names or where they live. It doesn't have to be everything that you have, but only a part of it.
Some people really shared God's love with the people in New Orleans. Electricians loaded up their trucks and drove hundreds of miles to help turn back on the electricity. Doctors and nurses from all over the United States went to New Orleans to help. Some people packed up their saws and went down to cut up trees that had fallen. Red Cross volunteers brought food with them and handed it out for days to people without food. Fishermen turned their boats into rescue boats and moved up and down streets like they were rivers to rescue people. Guess what, there were several people who used their boats to rescue all of the dogs and cats. Many other people who could not go to New Orleans sent money.
These were God's people showing God's love for people they did not even know. This is what God's love is all about. God shares his love with us and we share it with others. Amen.
