A sign
Children's sermon
Object:
a road sign and a sign you make that says "Empty Grave"
Good morning! (Holding up the road sign) We use signs like
this everywhere there are roads and cars to travel on those
roads. This is just one of many signs. There are so many other
kinds of signs. Can you tell me other signs that might be seen
alongside a road? (Let them answer.) There are stop signs,
yield signs, advertising signs, street and road names. There
must be a million different signs alongside the streets and roads
of our country.
Why are these signs there? (Let them answer.) Some signs give us directions, such as a "one way" sign. Some protect us -- like a "stop" sign. Others show us where we are. Street and road names help us here. Some signs -- like billboards and advertising signs -- want to sell us something.
One day Jesus was in the Temple and he drove away people who were selling things. Some people there wanted to know who made him boss so that he could drive away people who were there in their booths. "What sign can you give us?" they asked him.
They wanted a sign -- something to tell them that he could do what he just did. Jesus said that the sign that he could do this was what would soon happen to him. He would be killed and then he would rise from the grave. "This will be your sign," he said. "My body will die and then rise again. When you see that happening, then you'll know I have the authority to do what I just did." (Now hold up the "Empty Grave" sign.) This is how they would
know that Jesus is who he said he was. This sign says, "Empty Grave." Jesus died and his body did not stay in the grave the way it does for everyone else. He rose from the dead and when the disciples and others saw the empty grave, then they knew for sure Jesus was the Son of God. This is how we also know that Jesus was God's son and our Savior. The "empty grave" sign shows us that Jesus was real.
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for giving us a sure sign that you are God's Son and our Savior. Amen.
