A sign of caring
Children's sermon
Object:
a kiss
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to tell you today about something that Paul, an apostle of Jesus, wrote in a letter to the people in a city called Corinth. At the end of the letter he wrote that he hoped they had improved. Do you know what improve means? (let them answer) That's right, it means to get better. He knew that Jesus had died for them and that they would be among God's people in heaven, but he wanted them to work on being good to each other.
Paul wanted them to give each other a sign that they cared about one another. What do you think Paul chose? Do you think he asked them to shake hands? (let them answer) Do you think he asked them to give each other a big hug? (let them answer) Do you think he asked them to rub noses? (let them answer) Do you think he asked them to give each other a kiss? (let them answer) Let's go over that once more: shaking hands, big hug, rubbing noses, a kiss! Which one do you think Saint Paul said? (let them answer)
If you said a kiss, you are right. He said, "Greet one another with a holy kiss." What is a holy kiss? Is a holy kiss done like blowing a kiss? (demonstrate) How about giving someone as a greeting a big kiss on their lips? (let them answer) Could it be a kiss on the other person's hand? (let them answer) How about a kiss on the person's forehead? (let them answer) Or do you think a holy kiss is kissing each other on the cheek? (let them answer)
Blowing kisses, kissing lips, kissing a hand, kissing the forehead, or kissing the cheek are our choices. Which do you vote for? (let them answer) If you voted for kissing on the cheek, then you voted correctly.
Would anyone like to give me a holy kiss? (if no one volunteers, select someone to exchange a holy kiss with) I like this way of greeting people in the name of Jesus.
In the New Testament days, if you knew someone was a Christian, you would give them a holy kiss on the cheek. Men gave other men holy kisses and women gave other women holy kisses. In the church today, we have mostly replaced holy kissing with handshaking, but the idea is still to show that we care about one another.
Some people, even today, however, still practice the holy kiss. If you see someone in the church kissing someone else on the cheek, you will know that you are seeing a holy kiss, which means that they care about each other.
