Merry Christmas, boys and girls. (Show one of your signs). Do
any of you know what this sign means? (Let them answer.) That's
right, it means (provide answer). (Show another sign and ask what
it means. Let them answer.) Very good. Signs are very important
aren't they? They give us direction. They tell us what to do and
what not to do. The Bible gives many signs also.
You all know the story about the shepherds on Christmas Eve. The shepherds were in the field watching their sheep. Suddenly an angel appeared to them. The Bible says that the shepherds were very afraid when the angel appeared. Have any of you ever been afraid? (Let them answer.)
When the angel appeared, the angel said, "Don't be afraid. I have great news for you!" What was the news? (Let them answer.) That's right, baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Do you know what the angel did next? (Let them answer.) The angel gave them a sign! The sign was that the shepherds would "find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger."
The angel's sign was very helpful to the shepherds. Without the sign the shepherds might not have found Jesus. There are other important people in our lives who give us important direction signs. We need to follow the directions that our parents give us. Our Sunday school teacher gives us important directions. Our preacher gives us important directions. Can anyone name any of these people? (Let them answer.) The Bible gives us important directions.
This Christmas, when you see a sign that gives you an important direction, remember the angel and the sign given to shepherds.
