Sky-gazing
Children's sermon
Object:
binoculars
As you greet the children, talk while gazing into the heavens
through your binoculars. As you see new things, point your
binoculars in different directions.) Good morning, boys and
girls. I'm having a great time looking at all the things up in
the heavens. Look at those beautiful clouds. If I hadn't looked
up, I would have missed them. Oh, here comes a flock of Canadian
geese. They are in a V formation. They are really high, but I
think I can hear them now. When I look over here I see some
mountains. Boy, are those beautiful. Wait. Now the sun is going
down. It's night. The moon is coming out. Wow! Look at all those
craters on the moon. There's the North Star and there's the Big
Dipper. I wonder if I'll see a shooting star. I can really see
many things when I look up.
(Put your binoculars down and talk directly to the children.) Some of the most beautiful scenery and life is in the sky. Sometimes when I look at the world at ground level things look so drab and dull. Sometimes I forget to look up and see all the beautiful things up high that God has created. There are many wonderful things in the sky. If I didn't look up, I'd miss them. When I look up, I see new life -- different life than I see on earth. Did you know that Jesus wants us to look up, too? In today's lesson we are told to set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. That means to think good thoughts. Say kind things to others. Be friendly to those who need friends. Forgive those who treat you wrong. When you do that the Bible says that your future is "hidden with Christ." That means that when you look up and focus on good things you don't need to worry about your future. Because you are looking up, God will take care of you.
