Something to remember
Children's sermon
Object:
a slip of paper for every child with John 3:16 written on it
Today's lesson has one of the best-known scripture verses: John 3:16. Does anyone know what John 3:16 says? (see if anyone knows) John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." Sound familiar?
The reason this verse is so well known is because it sums up God's love for us and tells us why Jesus is so important. (hold up the slips of paper) I have written this verse on papers. I have one for each of you to take with you. (hand out the papers) Let's look at this verse together. The first part says that God loves us. He loves the whole world. He loves the world so much that he sent his only Son to live with us. We've talked a lot about why Jesus came to be with us. Jesus came so that he could walk among us and live as a man. By doing that, God could know exactly what it's like for us to live our lives.
The last part of the verse reminds us that if we believe in Jesus and follow him we won't die but have eternal life. What does that mean? (listen) It means we will live forever -- not on earth, of course. Everyone dies eventually. Eternal life is what we have when we go to heaven. Our bodies may die, but our spirits are resurrected to live forever with God in his heavenly kingdom. We don't just stop being when we die. The part of us that makes us who we are -- our spirit, our personality, our thoughts -- those things last forever. When we trust in Jesus, follow him and put him first in our lives we can receive the best gift of all: we can know God and be close to him forever and ever.
Prayer: God, you love the world very much. You sent Jesus to show us how to live and how to know you. Thank you! Amen.
