Sorrow
Children's sermon
Object:
a box of paper tissues
Saint Paul was very sad. When I am sad I like to be near a box
of Kleenex. When you are sad, what do you like to have around?
(Let them answer.) Are there people you like to have around you
when you are sad? (Let them answer.) I like certain people around
me when I feel sad. They make me feel better.
Now, why do you think Paul was sad? (Let them answer.) Many things could make a person sad, but Paul was sad because the people he loved the most -- his kind of people -- did not know about Jesus. He tried to tell many of them, but they would not listen to him. He loved them so much that he wanted them to get in on the wonderful news about Jesus. Since they wouldn't listen or believe in this good news, Paul was very sad.
Sometimes we forget that the most wonderful message in the world is the message about Jesus and his love for us. It is real good news. It is such good news that we also want people -- all people -- to know about it. There are people we love who also don't know about Jesus. They don't understand what we are and do as the church and they do not understand God's love for them.
Saint Paul made it his life's work to tell everyone about Jesus. He was called an evangelist because an evangelist tells "good news" -- the good news of Jesus and his love. In the language Paul spoke, the words good news were pronounced evangel. That's why he was called an "evangel-ist." Today we might call him a "good-news-ist."
We are all "good-news-ists" because we want to tell the good news about Jesus and his love to all people. We want everyone to know about Jesus and his love -- just like Saint Paul wanted everyone to know. So, each of us, in our own way, tells the story of Jesus and his love for us.
(Challenge each child to tell one person about Jesus. Next week, during the children's sermon, ask who they told.)
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for the good news. Help us tell others about you. Amen.
