The spark of life
Children's Activity

Teachers: This is the first Sunday of the new year. The children's message discussed the life that we receive as a gift from God. All brand new babies receive God's gift of life. None of us can give the gift of life, only God can. But, we have other gifts to give. Businesses frequently give gifts to the new baby and the baby's parents. But the gifts we have to give are not things you can see like from a business. Have a discussion of what these gifts might be that we can't see or hold. You might begin the discussion with suggestions about love, kindness, gentleness, sharing, teaching, and caring. Let the children each pick one of the gifts and you may want to have tiny boxes and precut wrapping paper, tape, and ribbon available to wrap their gifts. If you have a new baby in your church, you may want to give the gifts to the baby.
Parents: In our material culture we sometimes think of only store-bought gifts for new babies. Discuss with your children other things that we can give a new baby and its parents, like love, kindness, gentleness, sharing, teaching, and caring. These, too, are gifts that are as precious and valuable as life itself.
