A special lock of hair
Children's sermon
Object:
a lock of hair in an envelope
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought something in an envelope that has
been saved for a long time. Can you guess what it is? (Show the envelope
and let them guess.) It's some hair. We call it a lock of hair. It's not one
piece of hair, but a group of hairs all cut together. (Show them the lock of
hair.) Why would someone save hair like this? (Let them respond.)
Sometimes people save a lock of hair from their child's very first haircut.
It makes the parents smile when they look at it and remember when their
child was little.
How many colors of hair are there? (Let them respond.) There's black, brown, red and blond. But there are many shades in between. There are also many kinds of hair. There's very thin hair and there's very thick hair. There's straight hair and wavy hair and very naturally curly hair. Some curly hair is soft and loose and some is tight and bristly. There are so many different kinds of hair.
Can you look around and tell some of the different ways to wear your hair? (Let them look at each other and describe what styles they see.) There is long, straight hair, ponytails, bangs, no bangs, barrettes, short hair, bows, ribbons and braids.
Some people don't have much hair. They lose their hair, sometimes just in the front and on the top. Sometimes they lose it all over from medicine. Sometimes people have to have their hair all cut off for surgery. Sometimes hair grows back, sometimes it doesn't.
Our lesson today is about hair. The people were all worried about when Jesus was coming back. Some people thought it would be any day soon. They wanted to know what would happen and how they would know. Jesus told them not to worry. He said that not a hair of their heads would perish. Do you think Jesus meant that none of their hair would fall out? (Let them respond.) I don't think that's what Jesus meant. When we comb or brush our hair, some of it always stays on the brush or comb. We lose lots of hair every day. But I think Jesus meant for us not to worry so much. He said that no matter what happens or when, we are all very special and precious to God. He meant that no matter what happens, God will take care of us.
