A special meal
Children's sermon
Object:
a serving dish and a saw
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. (v. 56)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about something that you have seen many times. We are going to talk about communion. It is one of the lessons from the Bible we are reading today. Communion is not easy to explain because the Bible teaches us that it is a mystery. Jesus tells us that we should eat his body and drink his blood. That doesn't sound right, does it?
I want to share some ideas with you. I brought along one of my mother's favorite dishes. Almost every time we ate at home, this dish would be on the table. My mother gave this dish to me and my family now uses it at almost every meal. Whenever I pick up this dish, I think of my mother.
I also have a saw that my father gave to me. He loved to make things in his wood shop and when he did, he would use this saw. I thought it was very special when he asked me if I would like the saw. I said, "Yes," immediately. Whenever I use this saw I think of my father.
Jesus ate bread and drank wine with his disciples many times, almost every day. I don't think the disciples remembered what was talked about at the meals because they ate so often with Jesus. It is like the dish and the saw. I don't remember what my parents and I talked about while we ate or worked with the saw in the basement but they were special moments in my life.
One time while Jesus and his disciples were eating a special meal, Jesus said that the bread he was holding in his hands was his body and the wine he poured into his glass was his blood. He told them to remember this moment as a very special moment. He also told them to eat the bread he held and the wine he poured because it would be his body and his blood. He only said it that one time. He told them that whenever they repeated this same moment they would be eating his body and his blood.
How does bread and wine at a very special moment with special words change into his body and blood? That is the mystery. Christians talk about it often. Some Christians think the important thing is that we remember that moment. Other Christians believe that it changes us spiritually because Jesus is in the bread and wine. Some Christians believe that Jesus is present in the wine and the bread. We all believe but we may believe it differently.
Remember this, the dish still holds food just like it did for my mother and the saw still cuts just like it did for my father. I don't see them anymore but I remember their love, what they looked like and often what they taught me. My mother and dad are still a part of my living every day and they live within me. Amen.
