A special meal
Children's sermon

a birthday card
Good morning! I brought a birthday card with me this evening
to say something about an important day: my birthday. My birthday
is a very special day to me. Every year we have a celebration on
the day I was born (or close to it). I usually get birthday cards
like this. I'm wondering what happens on your birthday? Do you
get cards? (Let them answer.) Do you have parties? What else do
you think happens on a person's birthday? (Let them answer. You
hope they will say they have birthday cake and ice cream.)
Cake and ice cream are a part of most birthday celebrations. We remember a person's birthday with cards but also with eating and often with a party. Cake and ice cream remind us of birthday parties.
When Jesus wanted his followers to remember a very special night -- this night -- Maundy Thursday, he gave them food to help them remember: bread and wine (grape juice). He said that Christians would eat this special bread and drink this special drink until he returns again. It is a way of remembering a very special day, just like having cake and ice cream helps us celebrate our birthdays.
That is why we meet here tonight (and why we have Holy Communion [if you do tonight]). The bread and drink remind us of a special person and a special time in his life. I'm glad we have this time to remember Jesus and all he did for us.
Dear Jesus: You gave us bread and wine to help us remember you and what you did for us. Thank you, dearest Jesus. Amen.
