Children's sermon
Object:
blank name labels and a marker
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about things that only happen once. Let me give you an example. You have a birthday once a year. Is that correct? (let them answer) How old are you? (let a few of them tell you how old they are today) Today you are 7 years old. Last year you were 6. You will never be 6 again. Next year when you are 8 years old, you will never be 7 again. Do you understand? Very good!
I have something else that only happens to you once. It goes on the label. Do you know what happens to you once and never again in your lifetime will it happen again? (let them answer) That's right; you are given your name. Let's put your name on this label. (with some kind of a marker write their names on the labels; if there are a lot of children, give them the labels to take back to their parents) This name belongs to you and to no one else. Your parents gave you this name and God blessed the name when you were baptized. Your name is very special and you should always take very good care of it.
I want to tell you about something else that happened just once. This is even bigger than your name. As a matter of fact this is the most important thing that ever happened to you and to me. It is the most important thing that ever happened in the whole world. Do you think you could guess what the most important thing that ever happened in all of history is? (let them answer) Those are some pretty good guesses and they are big, but they are not the most important thing that ever happened.
It only happened once. It is more important than anything else that has ever happened. This is it! The most important thing that ever happened was when Jesus died for our sins. Jesus died just once and when he did, he died for your sins and my sins and everyone's sins. That is the most important thing. It only happened once.
So the next time you see your name I want you to think how important it is to you and to everyone else. But then I want you to think about the day Jesus died and how he died just once, but it was for everyone's sins. We are all forgiven forever. That's what we believe and we are sure of it.
What is the most important thing that happened only once? (let them answer) That's right; Jesus died once for all of our sins.
