The Spirit is truth
Children's sermon
Object:
a badge, an electric plug, a toy tractor, and a stethoscope
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I am going to show you something and you have to guess the word I am looking for that matches what I have shown you. Is that fair? For instance if I showed you this badge then what is the word I want you to say? (let them answer) No, not a policeman or a fireman or an FBI person, those are not the words I am looking for today. (show the badge) This badge stands for something very important. Do you know what it stands for? (let them answer) That's right, the law.
Here is another one. (show the electric plug) I take this electric plug and put in the plate on the wall and what do I get? (let them answer) No, not a shock. No, not electricity. I am looking for another word. What does electricity give to us? (let them answer) That's right, power. The power makes the furnace run, the dishwasher, the stove, the heat in our house, lights, and thousands of other things. The word is power.
Now here is a tough one. (show the tractor) When you see a tractor, what is the word that you think about first? (let them answer) No, not a farmer. What else would a tractor make you think about? What does the tractor do? It plows, it plants, and it harvests what? (let them answer) That's right! Food!
Finally, I have one more for you. (put on the stethoscope) What is this? (let them answer) That's right, it is something a doctor wears. What does it stand for? (let them answer) Not the doctor, not the nurse, not the hospital. What does a doctor do and what does a nurse do? Why do people go to the hospital? (let them answer) Very good, they help make people well. The word is healing. The stethoscope is for healing.
I really have one more and this is the one thing that Jesus is teaching us today in our lesson. What is the Spirit? What is the Holy Spirit? What does the Spirit do and why do we believe in the Spirit of God? (let them answer) The Spirit is very important to the world, to all of the people, to the church, to you and me and everyone that wants to believe in God. (let them answer) What do you always want someone to tell you? (let them answer) No, not that you are pretty. No, not that you are strong. No, not that you are rich. What does the Spirit tell you? That's right, the truth. The Spirit is truth. When the Spirit is in our group then the truth is in our group. The Spirit is truth.
Now you know. The badge stands for the law. The electric plug stands for power. The tractor stands for food. The stethoscope stands for healing. But best of all, the Spirit stands for what? (let them answer) The Spirit stands for what? That's right, the Spirit stands for truth. Amen.
