The Spirit's in you!
Children's sermon
Object:
slices of apples (one to share with each child)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you are hungry this
morning? (Let them answer.) That's nice to know, because so am I.
How many of you like to eat things that taste good and that are
good for you? (Let them answer.) Can you name some of those
things? (Let them answer.) I can think of one thing. It is an
apple. I brought some apples this morning and I want to share
them with you soon.
Some people like apples with peeling on and some with peeling off. I decided to take the peelings off. The great thing about apples is that they are sweet tasting. They make you feel good and help your bodies grow because they have nutritional value. Apples give us life.
I want you to know this morning that there is something else like an apple that is good for you in a different way. You don't have to eat it to get it inside your body. It is already there. It was there when you woke this morning. In fact, you brought it to church with you. Does anyone know what it is? (Let them answer.) The answer is this: the Spirit of God that dwells in each of us.
Like an apple, the Spirit of God gives us life. It gives us life in a different way than an apple. The Spirit dwells in us because we are followers of Jesus. The Spirit is in all followers of Jesus. That Spirit gives life to our bodies.
In our lesson this morning Paul tells us that there are two ways to live. One is to live in the way of sin. The other is to live in Christ. That means in the Spirit of God. When we chose to live the way of Christ it results in peace with God and a life of goodness. Just like apples, that give us healthy bodies, the Spirit gives us healthy bodies, too. (Pass out the apple slices and send the children back to their pews.)
