Squeaky people
Children's sermon
Object:
a chair with a squeak
And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and
night? Will he delay long in helping them? (v. 7)
Good morning, boys and girls. Yesterday, I was riding in my car and I kept hearing this noise. I call it a squeak. Do you know what a squeak sounds like? (let them answer) Squeaks are very annoying. It is hard to find a squeak in your car, so it is still squeaking.
I also have a chair that has a squeak and I brought it in with me today because it is driving me crazy. Every time I sit in my chair, it squeaks. (let the children hear the squeak) Does anyone know how to fix a squeak? (let them answer) That's right, you put oil on it and turn the wheels a couple of times and the squeak goes away.
I am not going to use my oilcan this morning to get rid of the squeak because I don't want to get any oil on the carpet. But as soon as our worship service is over I am going to get rid of the squeak.
The reason I am talking about squeaks is because people can be pretty squeaky. People make a lot of noise about things they want or need. Sometimes they need things fixed pretty fast. Sometimes they just do not understand why they have squeaks. The other day I heard a man complaining about how his foot hurt. He had been to the doctor, taken some medicine, and prayed to God that the pain would be removed. His foot was still sore and he was upset with the doctor, the medicine, and with God. "Why doesn't God do something for my sore foot?" the man asked. But that was not the first time I heard him complaining about how God was slow to answer him. He was really squeaking last night. His foot hurt and everyone who was near him heard him squeak. Finally, this morning just before church I asked him how his foot felt. He told me that God finally answered him and his foot felt much better. He seemed surprised.
I guess God answers squeaky people just like oil answers squeaky wheels on chairs. It is all right to be squeaky, according to Jesus. If you have something that God needs to know, you can keep on asking until God takes care of the problem. Keep on asking God for help when you need it and even though you will sound like a squeaking wheel, I promise you that God is listening and will get to you at the right time with the right answer. Amen.
