A sticker from God
Children's sermon
Object:
children's stickers (have one on your forehead)
For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. (v. 13)
Good morning, boys and girls. I woke up this morning with a very funny feeling. I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror and guess what I saw? (let them answer) That's right, I had a sticker on my forehead. How many of you have ever gotten a sticker? (let them answer) That's great. Who gave them to you? (let them answer) Your teachers, your mom and dad, your grandparents, and your Sunday school teacher have all given you stickers. Why did they give them to you? (let them answer) You received stickers because you did good work, did your chores, or had perfect attendance at school. Those are all very good reasons for receiving a sticker. But why did I get one?
I've thought about this a lot, and I wondered if God gave me a sticker for being a pastor. What do you think? (let them answer) Sometime during the night, he came into my bedroom and put it on my forehead. Of course, he could have sent an angel. If it was an angel I wish I would have been awake because I have always wanted an angel to visit me, like an angel visited Mary, Joseph, Paul, Peter, Jacob, and many other people in the Bible. I think it must have been an angel! What do you think? (let them answer)
I wonder why God thought I deserved this sticker? Is it because I visited the hospitals yesterday and prayed with people? Do you think God gave me this sticker through an angel because I have a really good sermon today? Maybe my sticker is for following all the rules in the Ten Commandments. I must be pretty special to God because I haven't seen anyone else with a sticker. Why do you think I got this sticker? (let them answer)
Do you want to know the truth? God doesn't give out stickers. My wife gave me this sticker because I cleaned up the kitchen last night. After I went to sleep, she put it on my forehead. She told me this morning.
God doesn't give out stickers for things we have done. Instead, God gives us faith so that we can be believers. The more we believe in God, the more faith we receive. We don't need stickers. We need faith. Faith gives us kindness, joy, confidence, courage, patience, and love. Faith gives us everything, but a sticker just thanks us for doing something that someone already expected.
The next time you get a sticker, thank the person for giving it, but then remember the great gift that God gives you is called faith.
