Still sinners
Children's sermon
Object:
a bouquet of flowers
Several weeks ago many members of this congregation went to
the cemetery. Why did they do that? (Let them answer.) They did
that because it was Memorial Day. On Memorial Day we remember
those loved ones who have died and gone on to heaven. They are no
longer on the earth, but many people took flowers to their graves
anyway! They did that because they still love the ones who are no
longer living. Even though the loved ones have gone on to heaven
and are no longer living among us, we show our love for them by
taking flowers to the cemetery.
In a similar way, God showed his love for us because "while we still were sinners Christ died for us." Even though we were sinners, even though we were not even born yet, God still loved us and sent Jesus to die for us.
On this "Father's Day" it is so good to know that we have a loving and generous heavenly Father -- God -- who loved us even though we could not love God back! That's real love, isn't it?
We love people who have died and God loves us before we are born. I guess that's the way love works. It just goes beyond time. Love surely is powerful, isn't it?
Dear God: Thank you for loving us sinners even before we were born. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us from sin. Amen.
