Stone pile
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The children's sermon is about Herod's
magnificent temple. Find an artist's rendition of this structure
in a biblical commentary or dictionary (under "Temple, Herod's")
and show the children approximately how the temple appeared in
Jesus' day. Explain to them how the temple platform was made of
huge "Herodian" stones measuring 40 inches in height and 3 to 10
feet in length (one has been found that is an amazing 39 feet in
length!). Show with a measuring stick or tape the size of these
stones. When these stones were pointed out to Jesus, he said
something quite improbable: "The days will come when not one
stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down" (v. 6).
In the year 70 A.D., the temple was indeed destroyed by the
Romans!
Even though wonderful human buildings seem to last forever, all things eventually fall into dust. But the promises of God in Christ Jesus remain our hope and our salvation.
