Straining the difference
Children's sermon
Object:
A strainer or filter (a tea strainer might be
appropriate) and some tea made with loose leaf tea
Good morning! Today is New Year's Day but it is also a day
when we celebrate Jesus' name. On this day Jesus was given the
name "Jesus," which means "one who saves." Just seven days ago we
celebrated the birth of the Savior. Today we celebrate the
Savior's name.
To show how Jesus saves, I brought some tea with me this morning. Did you know that tea is made out of leaves? By mixing water with tea leaves, we get tea. But no one likes to drink tea with the leaves still in it -- yuck! So I brought a strainer with me this morning. This strainer will keep the tea leaves out but let the tea go into my cup. Here -- let me show you. (Pour a cup of tea through the strainer so that the strainer or filter catches the leaves.)
Jesus told about a day when he would separate people according to the kind of people they are. All people are people, but those who believe in Jesus are special to him. He wants to separate them from the others -- like we separated the tea from the tea leaves here this morning.
How can you tell which people belong to Jesus and which do not? Usually you can tell by the kind of lives they live. Those who do good to others are those who probably belong to Jesus. Jesus said that whenever we help feed hungry people food, that is a good, loving act. Whenever we give thirsty people something to drink, that is just like giving Jesus himself something to drink. Whenever we welcome people we don't know, it's like welcoming Jesus himself! When a poor person needs clothing and we give clothing to him or her, it's like what? (Let them answer.) It's like giving clothing to Jesus. And when we visit a person to cheer her or him on, it's like what? (Let them answer.) It's like doing it to Jesus.
Tea is different from water; Christians are different from other people. Christians have been flavored with the love of Jesus. Our difference is in how we love others and show it by our helping others in their times of need. I'm glad you know Jesus.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Help us be helpers of others whenever and wherever we can. Amen.
