He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (v. 8)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we're going to talk about strength. How many of you are strong? (allow answers) How strong are you? (allow answers) What is the heaviest thing you can move? (allow answers) Wow, that's pretty strong!
How did you get to be this strong? Did you life weights? Did you take special vitamins? (allow answers) Sometimes people who want to be extra-strong -- stronger than they can be from playing sports and doing normal work -- will lift weights and take special vitamins to make their bodies stronger. They will train their muscles until their muscles grow to be very strong. Some of these people can lift over 1,000 pounds. Some of them can lift entire cars. Wow! That's really strong!
Today our New Testament reading talks about strength. It says that God will strengthen us so that we will be strong when we go to heaven. What do you think the Bible means when it says strong? Does it mean strong enough to lift a car, like those people who are super-strong? (allow answers) Probably not. Lifting cars isn't something that God needs us to do in the world. It's cool when people can lift cars and you can use your ability to lift a car as a way to spread God's word... but not everyone needs to lift cars. We can spread God's word in other ways.
Instead of making us strong in our bodies, God promises to make us strong enough to do his work. What kinds of ways do you think God needs us to be strong to do his work? (allow answers) God needs us to be strong against temptation: He needs us to be able to tell ourselves "no" when we want to do something that we know we shouldn't do. God needs us to be strong in our friendships with others: he needs us to kind and generous to help show our friends -- and even strangers -- what it means to live a godly life. There are many other ways God wants us to be strong. See if you can come up with more ways to be strong for God this week.
It's not about how much weight you can lift or how big your muscles are because when we are strong for God, what matters is on the inside. Amen.
