Submission to God's will
Children's sermon
Object:
a one-dollar bill (or perhaps a five) and a deck of cards
Good morning! I have something here which I'm sure one of
you would like to have. (Show the bill.) Now here's what I'm
going to do. I'm going to start dealing out the cards in this
deck. (Show the cards.) Whoever gets the first ace will win this
bill. (Deal the cards until somebody gets an ace and give the
child the bill.)
Now, I have a purpose in doing this today, and I'll tell you
what it is. But first I want you to think about the story we
heard in the Gospel reading. An angel came to Mary and ... (tell
the story). Now, does anybody remember what Mary said after the
angel told her she was going to be the mother of Jesus? (Let them
answer.) Mary said, "Let it be with me according to your word."
In other words, Mary was saying that she would do whatever God
wanted her to do. Would all of you do the same? Are you all ready
to do whatever God wants you to do? (Let them answer.)
Well, let's find out if you are ready to do what God wants
you to do. __________, you have won that bill, and I know you
would like to keep it, but do you know what God wants you to do
with it? (Let the child answer.) God would like you to put that
bill in the collection plate. Are you willing to do that? Are you
willing to do what Mary did and be in submission to God's will?
(Let the child answer.) Well, I hope you will do that. It's hard
sometimes to do what God wants, but we are always blessed if we
do it.
Let's pray for God's help in doing what He wants us to do.
Dear Father in Heaven: Please help us to be like Mary and do what
You want us to do, even when it seems very hard to do it. Amen.
