Suffering for Jesus
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: We are blessed to be living in a nation
where we are not persecuted for being Christians, but it may not
always be so. Over the past several years, religious freedom has
been defined more and more narrowly by government, and a time may
well come when it will become harder and harder for Christians to
publicly profess biblical truths without getting into trouble
with government. Our children should understand that real
Christians must be willing to suffer persecution for being the
kind of people who are willing to publicly confess Christ and his
truth.
*Play some games of "What would you do?" Describe a
situation where a Christian is in grave danger of persecution if
he/she confesses his/her Christianity and ask the children what
they would do if they were in that situation. You can use some
very dire situations where professing faith means death or
imprisonment and others where it might just be embarrassing or
uncomfortable. See how many of the children seem to be willing to
face severe consequences for professing and practicing their
faith. After each exercise, lead them in a discussion of what
Jesus expects us to do when we face persecution.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read or tell a story about a Christian martyr who died for
Christ.
