Sweet oranges

some oranges
Happy Easter, boys and girls! How many of you had some vitamin C this morning? (let them answer) If you had citrus fruits, you did. Can you name some citrus fruits? (let them answer) Grapefruits, lemons, and oranges are citrus fruits. They have lots of vitamin C in them. It keeps us from getting colds quite as often. Sometimes cold cereals have vitamin C in them, but the citrus fruits have it in them naturally. They don't have to have the vitamin added to it like cold cereal does. What can you tell me about grapefruits? (let them answer) Sometimes they're sour and they are either white or red inside. They have a thick yellow skin called a rind on them. What do you know about lemons? (let them answer) Lemons are very sour. Can you make a face like if you just bit into a lemon? (make a face and demonstrate) That's a nasty face! What does it make when you add sugar and water to lemon juice? (let them answer) Lemonade! I love lemonade in the spring and summer. In the winter hot lemonade and honey is delicious, too. Grapefruits and lemons are citrus fruits, but they are both kind of sour. But most oranges are usually very sweet and good to eat with no sugar. You can eat them plain by peeling the rind off, you can cut them in sections, or you can squeeze them for juice. You can even put a peppermint stick in an orange and suck out the juice through the peppermint stick just like a straw. Oranges are delicious. When oranges come off the tree, they aren't always orange. They're green and they don't look as good.
Oranges remind me of Easter because the rind on the outside reminds me of the tomb where Jesus was laid. There was a big stone over the door and it must have been very heavy and thick just like the rind on this orange. But when the stone is moved and the rind is off, inside there's a sweet surprise! Sweet oranges and Jesus is risen from the dead! Our lesson says that Jesus was buried and that he was raised from the dead. Peeling back the rind of oranges reminds me of Easter. It's always a surprise finding out how good the fruit tastes inside all this rind. It must have been quite a surprise when Jesus' friends found out he was alive. But what a sweet surprise! Happy Easter, Jesus is risen!
