Taking beautiful pictures
Children's sermon
Object:
a camera, a roll of film, and a picture
Good morning, boys and girls. I have something special with me this morning. Almost every family has one and it's used when babies are born, when children have birthdays or when they graduate from school. Some families take them along when they go on vacation or go to a wedding. Does anyone know what I have? (let them guess) That's right, it's a camera!
I brought the camera with me to show you that it has two important parts. Does anyone know what those parts are? (let them answer) There's the camera, which you can see and there's the film, which you can't see when you are taking pictures. When the camera and film are working together properly, they make beautiful pictures.
I have another reason for showing you my camera and film. I wanted to explain to you that each part comes from a different place. The camera comes from a camera-making factory and the film comes from a film-making factory. The picture is created because the camera and film work very well together. You could not have a picture if the film was no good or the camera did not work.
In his book of Romans, Paul tried to explain who Jesus was. Paul wanted everyone to know that Jesus grew up and lived like people. His mother, Mary, came from the family of King David and Solomon. This part of Jesus was like the camera. But there was another side to Jesus and it came from the Spirit of God. It was like the film inside the camera. It wasn't something you could see but it was a big part of Jesus. Jesus was human and he was God and the two parts worked together as part of God's plan. Jesus was like the picture made from the camera and the film.
Jesus knew his human side. He ate and slept and talked with people like you and me. Jesus looked at the sun, moon, and stars, and he loved the trees, grass, and lakes. But Jesus also thought and lived like God. He did not sin and he knew that he had the power to forgive sin while he died on a cross. He also knew that he would be resurrected by the power of God. So Jesus wasn't made from two cameras, two rolls of film, or a husband and wife. Like a camera and film working together, Jesus was made from the body of Mary and the Spirit of God. The next time you see a camera, try to remember that Jesus is both the Son of Man and the Son of God.
