Talking to God
Children's sermon
Object:
a telephone
Jesus once prayed to God just as we pray to God. When I
think of praying to God, I think of it as a conversation with God
-- like talking with God. The problem is that I cannot see God
like I can see you. When I think of that fact I think of prayer
as being like a telephone conversation.
When I call someone on the phone, I usually can't see the person I'm calling either. But the other person is there. I can talk to him or her and ask questions or tell them what is going on in my life. In the same way, I can call God and tell God all about my life.
(Get the telephone out and talk into the receiver.) Talking to God is like talking into a telephone. "Hello, God. This is _____ (name)_____. I wanted to tell you that I am here this morning with some of your people. These are people who are members of _____ (name) _____ church and we are gathered here right now to talk about talking to you. I just told them that talking to you is like talking on a telephone. I cannot see you, but I know you hear me. I know you care about me. I know you love me. You want me to talk to you a lot.
"Usually, when I talk to you, I do so in my prayers with my eyes closed and my head bowed. But I thought it would be fun to show the children how prayer isn't really too hard. It's like talking to you on the telephone. That's pretty easy.
"I'd better hang up now, God. It's been good talking with you. Thank you for listening to me. Good-bye ... I mean, Amen."
Prayer is simple. Jesus prayed to God and called God his Father. We also pray to God and often end our prayers with the words, "In Jesus' name." And, instead of saying "Good-bye" at the end of our prayers, we say, "Amen."
Let's talk to God one more time here this morning:
Dear God: We are thankful that we can talk to you. Be with us always. Amen.
