The teacher's apple
Children's sermon
Object:
an apple
Good morning! I brought an apple with me to remind us that
Jesus is a teacher. Students often bring apples to their
teachers. If Jesus is my teacher, I want to present this apple
to him.
Today I want this apple to teach us something about God. (Carefully cut through the apple across the middle -- not from stem to stem.) Wow! Look inside this apple! What do you see? (Let them respond. They will probably see the five-pointed star shape around the seeds first.) Does the star remind you of anything? (Let them answer.) It reminds me of Jesus who was born in Bethlehem and a star shone over the place of his cradle. So in the apple I see something that reminds me of Jesus.
I also see that the shape of the apple is round -- like a circle. Does a circle have a beginning? (Let them answer.) No, a circle has no beginning or ending. God is like that. God has no beginning and no ending. God is eternal. So I see in the apple something that reminds me of our creator God.
What else do you see in the apple? (Let them respond. They will probably see the seeds.) When I see the apple seeds in the star of the apple, I think of how the church began a long time ago on Pentecost just like a seed. There was just a small beginning, but the Holy Spirit made the church grow and develop so that it has become large and has many millions of believers like you and me. So, in the seeds I see something that reminds me of God the Holy Spirit.
Wow! All that in the middle of an ordinary apple! Yet the apple is one. It has a star inside and is round and has seeds, but it is only one piece of fruit. In the same way God is Creator, Jesus, and Holy Spirit! But one God!
When the great teacher Jesus (and the word "rabbi" means "teacher") told about God, he taught us things we never knew before. Our God is a Tri-une God -- three in one. God is a lot like this apple. I'm glad God has given us Jesus to teach us. (Eat the apple or share it with the children.)
Dearest God: Creator, Jesus, and Holy Spirit. Teach us more! Amen.
