Telling the story
Children's Activity
Object:
At this point, Christmas is just two days away! This is when things really get exciting. Mary and Joseph are wrapping up their journey to Bethlehem, but the real journey is just about to begin. Pretty soon they will have a new baby to raise! In the church, we place a high priority on telling the story of Jesus. The story is bigger, of course, than what happens at Christmas, but the Christmas story is where it all begins.
This morning the children hear the reading from Matthew, but the reading in Luke 2:1-20 may be more familiar to some. As we finish getting ready for Christmas, sit with your children and read the Christmas story to them. Read the story from Matthew or from Luke. Read a version of the story from a children's Bible or storybook. As you read, talk with your children about all the amazing things that happen in the story. Explore your imaginations and let the wonder of the story become real to you.
o Mary was just a young girl. How did she feel about all this? Was it scary?
o What was it like for Joseph to be a part of this?
o What did the stable look like? What did it smell like?
o How did Mary feel about having a baby there?
o How must the shepherds have felt when the angels suddenly appeared?
o What did the angels look like?
o What did the star look like?
Telling the story is so important. Spend time with the story. As it begins to be more real it will mean so much more!
