Telling the truth
Children's sermon
Object:
some slips of paper and pencils
Good morning! I'm going to ask you a question and I want you
to answer on this piece of paper that I'm giving you. (Hand out
the paper and pencils) The question is this. Is there any one of
you who have not committed a sin in the last week? Is there any
one of you who have done absolutely nothing wrong that would
offend your parents, your brothers or sisters, your friends or
most important, God, in the last week? If you have been
absolutely perfect this last week, put an X on that paper. If you
have sinned in some way put an S on the paper. When you have
answered, fold up the paper and give it to me. (Let them put down
their answers and collect the papers.)
Okay, let's see what we have on these papers. (Open the
papers and count the answers. Depending on what you find, respond
with A or B)
A: (If all are S) Yes, I see that you are all very honest.
If I was filling one out, I would have put an S also. We are all
sinners and we do sin even though we try hard not to. Saint John,
in a letter he wrote, said, "If we say that we have no sin, we
deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." The truth is that
we do sin, but if we believe in Jesus and we are sorry for our
sins, will he forgive us? (Let them answer.)
B: (If any X is found) It looks like we have
___person/people who think they got through the week without
sinning. Do you think they really did? (Let them answer.) No, I
doubt that it happened. I know it didn't happen with me. Saint
John, in a letter he wrote, said, "If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." The truth is
that we are all sinners and we do sin every day. But, if we
believe in Jesus and we are sorry for our sins, will he forgive
us? (Let them answer.)
Let's thank Jesus for being willing to forgive our sins and
ask him to help us when we are tempted to sin.
Dear Jesus: We know that we are sinners and that we sin every
day. We are sorry for our sins and we are so glad that you are
willing to forgive us. Help us when we are tempted to resist to
do what you want us to do. Amen.
