Thanking Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a thank-you card
Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this
foreigner? (v. 18)
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to ask you a question. If you lost your favorite video game and someone sent you one just like it for you to keep, how would you feel about the person that sent you the game? (let them answer) Would you just start playing the game and tell everyone how happy you were to have your favorite game again? (let them answer) What is the first thing that you would do? (let them answer) The first thing you would do is thank the person that sent you the game. Isn't that what you would do? (let them answer) How would you thank them? Would you call them on the phone? (let them answer) Would you find a thank- you card and send it to them? (let them answer) Would you go to their house and thank them for replacing your game? (let them answer) You might do all three if the person lived far away from you.
I like to send cards. The cards are called "thank-you cards," and there is generally a message like the one I have in my hand and a place for me to write a message and sign my name. People like to receive "thank-you cards."
Sometimes we forget to thank people and this is very disappointing. In the Bible there is a story about Jesus healing ten people of a very serious disease. These people were very sick and would have soon died. Jesus blessed them and sent them to see the priests. While they were on their way to the church, they discovered that the disease had left them and they were healed. They were so happy that they shouted to everyone that they were healed and they ran to their homes and told everyone there. It was so good to feel healthy again. They forgot all about Jesus, except for one of them. He was a foreigner. He came back and thanked Jesus for the wonderful gift of good health. Jesus blessed the man again and told him to go on with his day. But nine of the ten people never came back. They didn't send a card, or a message, or anything. They only thought about themselves and how happy they were.
God does a lot of things for us. He gives us morning and night. He gives us food to eat and clothes to wear. He provides supplies that we can use to build our houses and our cars and everything we have. Do you ever thank God for his goodness or are we just too happy to think about God?
Remember the story about the men who forgot to thank Jesus for their good health and how disappointed Jesus was in them? Don't you forget to thank Jesus for all of the good things he gives you. Every morning and every night when you pray to God, thank him for giving you such a wonderful day and all of the things he gives us to be happy. Amen.
