That's the Spirit
Children's sermon
Object:
a balloon
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a balloon with me this
morning so that I could tell you about this morning's lesson. The
lesson is about God's Spirit. The lesson says that when Jesus
died he was made alive in the Spirit. The Spirit is something we
can't see. But if we love Jesus, we too, become filled with the
Spirit of God.
(Blow up the balloon, or ask a child to blow it up for you.) When I blow up my balloon it is filled with air. As more air fills the balloon the balloon grows. Imagine that you are the balloon. Imagine that the air going into the balloon is God's Spirit. What happens to you when the Spirit fills you? (Let them answer.) You grow as a Christian.
You probably wonder how can God's Spirit enter you. You probably also wonder what happens to you when the Spirit enters you. You need to know that God's Spirit is a gift from God. It comes to us when we love Jesus and become followers of Jesus. One way we are following Jesus is by attending church this morning. What happens when the Spirit becomes part of you? The Spirit is among all of us this morning. The Bible says that it is a creative power. One thing that it gives us is life after we die. That means that we are right now alive in God's Spirit.
Look what happens if you are a person that is not filled with God's Spirit. (Hold the balloon and let the air out of it.) If you don't have the Spirit of God in you, you are lifeless. Ask yourself if you want to be filled with God's Spirit. That's like a balloon filled with air. That's when you are filled with life and truth. Or would you rather be without God's Spirit? That's like a lifeless, balloon without air. (Hold up the balloon without air.) I know the answer. You do too. Each one of us wants to be a person filled with God's Spirit. We want to be alive and to love God. That's the spirit.
