"Things don't last"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: It is very easy for children to
conclude that the most important things in life are material
possessions. They see the kind of priority the world places on
material things and seldom see a higher value placed on spiritual
things. We need to instill in them an appreciation for the things
of God.
*Prepare some 3 x 5 cards with material things listed on
some and spiritual things on others. For material things list
such things as money, houses, cars, boats, high-paying job, and
so forth. For spiritual things list love of parents, God's love,
contentment, love of friends, and so forth. Have one spiritual
card that says, "Eternal life with God in heaven." Keep a list of
the cards that you can refer to.
Give each child a card to hold and explain to them that you
are going to ask them to line up in order of importance. The most
important things will be in front of the line and the less
important things at the back.
Now read one of the material items and ask the child who has
that card to identify himself. Ask the group how important this
item is; should it be at the front of the line or the back or
somewhere in between? Continue to name items and ask where they
should be, using some material and some spiritual items. Let the
children make the decisions about the importance of each.
Finally, ask about the card, "Eternal life with God in
heaven." Perhaps they will all agree that this should be at the
head of the line.
When all the cards are read and the children lined up, you
will have a visual representation of their opinion regarding
these values
Sunday school assembly opening:
Sing a hymn about putting our trust in God and not in the
world's values, such as "What Is The World To Me?" or "I'm But A
Stranger Here."
