Three, yet One
Children's sermon
Object:
Three small candles and a means of lighting them
Today is "Trinity Sunday" and it is a time to celebrate the
Trinity. But what, exactly, is the Trinity? That is a question
many people ask. Let me try to answer that this morning.
First of all, the word "trinity" comes from two Latin words. Tri means three. If you have a tricycle, it means you have a three-wheeled means of transportation. The second word is unity. Unity means one! Put the words together and you get "three-one." That doesn't make much sense, does it?
What the "Three-One" (or "Trinity") means for us is that God is just one God. But God has three persons. So it means that God is just one and yet God is three!
Perhaps I can explain it this way. I have three candles here. Now let's put them together (you could use a rubber band here to hold them together). Okay -- we'll light the candles now. (Do so.) What do we have here? We have three candles but just one flame. It is a kind of "Trinity" -- one flame; three candles.
We may not be able to figure it all out, but we trust in God that the Trinity is a true understanding of who God is and what God is like. Today we celebrate this important belief of the church. Thank you so much for helping me explain something I believe and know is important, but which I don't fully understand myself.
