Time to pray
Children's sermon
Object:
your own hands, folded in prayer
Good morning, boys and girls. (Fold your hands in prayer as
you ask the opening question.) I want to tell you about a little
girl your age. She had many things to be thankful for. She had
wonderful friends and she lived in a wonderful family who loved
her. Every night, when she went to bed, she said a bedtime
prayer. One night she said her usual prayer. At the end of her
prayer she decided to thank God for the wonderful time she had
with her friends that day. The next night she decided to give
thanks for her family at the end of her prayer. Soon after that,
each night when she prayed she gave thanks for something special
in her life.
This little girl soon discovered that prayer was changing her life. Prayer was the time she spent with God. Her prayer time was making her think of all the things that she was thankful for. This story reminds me of this morning's lesson. In it, Paul told early Christians that he, too, was always giving thanks to God in his prayers. How many of you say these words when you go to bed ... "Now I lay me down to sleep ..." (Let them raise their hands.) Did you know that almost all the people in this church said that prayer when they were your age? Let's ask all the persons who said that prayer when they were children to raise their hands. (Ask for a raise of hands.) Look at all the people who said the same prayer that you say each night. God heard every one of those prayers. God hears your prayers, too. When you say your prayer this week remember to thank God for someone in your life. Remember, too, that God hears your prayers.
