Transfigured!
Children's Activity
Object:
Materials
Waxed paper
Old crayons
Scissors
An iron
A thin towel
Pencil
Pencil sharpener
Butterfly pattern
String
Instructions
Talk with the children about how Jesus' appearance changed right before the disciples' eyes and they knew that they were in God's presence.
Demonstrate for the children how something can be transformed into something else by helping them turn broken crayons into beautiful butterflies.
Trace the butterfly pattern onto a large piece of waxed paper. Fold the waxed paper in half so that when you cut out the picture you will have two sides, for a front and a back.
Using bright, colorful crayons, sharpen the crayons into shavings (be sure to peel the paper off the crayons first). Sprinkle the shavings onto one side of the waxed paper. Leave about 1/2 inch around the crayons to the edge of the pattern on the waxed paper. (The waxed paper will make a seal so the crayon shavings will not fall out.) Then, place the second piece of waxed paper on top. Place a thin towel over the top and iron on low to medium heat (enough heat to melt the crayons and wax).
Let the butterflies cool. Cut around the edge of the pattern and punch a hole in the top. Then add a string to use as a hanger.
If desired, use a black permanent marker to make markings on the butterfly's wings.
