Tried and true

Object:
a battery tester (normally comes with the purchase of new batteries and is located on the back of the package) and some batteries, some good and some bad
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what a battery is? (let them answer) Very good! We need them in flashlights, computer games, lots of toys, and many other things. Have you ever tried to use a flashlight or a radio and it would not work? (let them answer) What happened? (let them answer) That's right, the battery died. And then what do you do? (let them answer) That's right, you find a new battery. But sometimes there is more than one battery used in a flashlight or radio and we need to know which battery is good and which one is bad. How can you tell a dead battery from a good battery? (let them answer) Well, here is the answer. I have a battery tester. You put the battery in here and test it. If it is a good battery, it will pass the test; if it is a bad battery, it will not pass the test.
Many times we are tested just like batteries. We are tested in school and when we go to the doctor's and other places. But we are not the only people who have ever been tested. Many people tested Jesus. They wanted to know if Jesus was really sent by God.
The Bible says that Jesus was tested in every way that we are tested only after all of the testing was done, Jesus was found to be perfect, without a sin. But there was something else about Jesus that made him really special. I want to share that with you. Even though Jesus never sinned, he understands people like you and me who make mistakes. Jesus says that he is not happy when we fail, but he forgives us. Jesus is right there with us no matter what we do or what we say that is wrong. Jesus helps us stop being bad and shows us how much happier we will be when we do what is right.
There are bad batteries and good batteries. If we want things to work, we need good batteries. The bad batteries can be thrown away because they will never make anything run. We can get rid of our sin by giving it to Jesus. Jesus will take our sin, forgive us for sinning, and get rid of the sin forever.
So the next time you see some batteries, I want you to think about Jesus and how he was tested. But with that test he learned how it is to be like one of us. That is why he forgives us and loves us and gives us new energy to live and be a part of his life.
