The true light
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers and Parents: Jesus is the Light of the World. He is
the true light that came into the world to enlighten everyone.
Getting the children to understand the analogy of Jesus as a
light is an important concept for them to grasp. Today, he is the
light that makes God's word in the Bible understandable for all
of us.
* (For older children) Take some passages in the Old
Testament which speak of the Messiah, for example, Deuteronomy
18:18, Psalm 22, or Isaiah 53. Show them how these passages are
now understandable because of what Jesus did for us. He
enlightens us regarding the word of God, which was written long
before he came.
* Bring a strong flashlight with good batteries, a candle,
and a Bible. Make the room as dark as possible and light the
candle. Open the Bible and read by the candlelight. As you are
reading, have one of the children blow out the candle. Tell them
that this shows that we need a strong light that will not easily
blow out if we are to read and understand the Bible. Then turn on
the flashlight and read by it. Have them try to blow out the
flashlight as they did the candle. Emphasize that Jesus is the
strong light like the flashlight that will not be blown out. He
makes it possible for us to understand the Word of God.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Start with a room as dark as you can get it. Have a child
come into the room with a lighted candle as you are reading the
Gospel text for today, verses 1-9. When you read the last verse
(9), repeat it two or three times.
* Sing the first verse of "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and
talk about Jesus as the "everlasting light" mentioned in the
song.
