Trustworthy
Children's sermon
Object:
a $5 bill
You have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. (v. 23b)
Object: a $5 bill
Good morning, boys and girls! What do you see in my hand? (hold up $5 bill; allow answers) That's right, $5. How many of you have had $5 before? (allow answers) That can be a lot of money, can't it? What can you buy for $5? (allow answers) What if I told you I wanted you to keep this $5 in your pocket all week but not spend any of it? Could you do that? (allow answers) Let's say you did that. I would say to myself, "Wow, they're really trustworthy! I know that I can trust them, and I can rely on them to help with other things, too!" Do you know what being trustworthy means? (allow answers) It means other people can count on you to do what they ask you to do. If you always do your homework for school, your teacher knows that she can count on you to finish your work. If you help your mom set the table for dinner every night, your mom knows you are trustworthy to help her get ready for meals.
Our Bible verse for today says, "You have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things." Let's go back to that $5 bill. If you are trustworthy enough to bring that $5 bill back to me, I may ask you to keep a $10 bill for me. Ten dollars! That's a lot of money! It would be pretty tempting to spend that, wouldn't it? What can you buy for ten dollars? (allow answers) You may see one of those things in the store and think, "I have a whole $10 in my pocket! I could buy that!" If you did buy that, though, on Sunday I would ask, "Where's my $10?" What would you say? (allow answers) I would be very sad, because you would break our trust. But if you brought back that $10, I might use Jesus' words: "Well done! You have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things." Maybe I would pay you to mow my lawn or take money to the bank for me. When you're old enough to get a job, being trustworthy is very important.
Even now, it's important to be trustworthy for God, your family, and your friends. Being trustworthy means you don't steal, lie, or cheat. What are some other things you should not do if you are a trustworthy person? (allow answers) That's right. God doesn't want us to do any of those things. God is always faithful to us; don't we want God to find us faithful to him? Amen.
