Get Out Of Jail Free card from a Monopoly game
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever
watched someone play the game called Monopoly -- or how many of
you have ever played it? (Let them answer.) I brought a card from
the game with me this morning. (Show the card.) Can anyone tell
me what this card says? (Let someone read it.) This card is a get
out of jail free card. When you play Monopoly sometimes you land
in jail. When you do, you lose two turns or you have to pay money
to get out of jail. There's another way to get out of jail when
you play Monopoly. Can anyone tell me how to get out of jail?
(Let someone answer.) Right. If you get one of these cards you
can get out of jail. You don't lose a turn and you don't have to
pay money. How many of you have ever played Monopoly and were
able to get out of jail free because you had one of these cards?
(Let them raise their hands.)
This card makes me think of this morning's lesson. Do you know that today we are celebrating Reformation Sunday? This is a very important Sunday to Lutherans. It is a day that we remember Martin Luther. He helped start the Reformation. A portion of our scripture tells us something that Jesus told his followers. Here is what it says: "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." That almost sounds like the get out of jail card, which sets you free from jail in Monopoly. With Jesus, you don't need a card to set yourself free. The truth that Jesus tells us about -- which is God's love and God's grace -- sets us free.
Here's what I want you to remember this morning. The next time you play Monopoly remember that you might end up in jail. If you get a card like this one, the card will set you free. As Christians we are followers of Jesus. When we follow Jesus we become his disciples. When we do that we know the love of God. God's love sets us free. Thank you for coming this morning.
