The truth will make you free
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Reformation Sunday provides us a wonderful
opportunity to make sure our children understand the central
truth of Christianity, that we are saved as a free gift of God
through faith and not our own works. All false religions teach
that one achieves the objective of that religion (Heaven,
Nirvana, oneness with God, or whatever) by our own works. Only
Christianity teaches that God has done what is necessary for our
salvation and all we need to do is believe in Jesus who did it
for us. That is the truth that sets us free, and we must ensure
that the children understand that great truth.
*Make up a bunch of cards with all kinds of good works
printed on the cards. Use such things as "Gave money to the
church," "Helped the poor," "Attended church regularly," and so
forth. Make sure you have enough different cards so that every
child will receive one. Then tell them that you are acting as the
gatekeeper in Heaven and they are seeking admission. You ask the
question, "Why should I let you into Heaven?" They are to respond
with the answer on the card. When all of the children have
answered the question, explain to them that none of those things
will get them into Heaven. Hand out to each one a card with the
following sentence printed on it: "I believe that Jesus Christ,
the Son of God, came to earth and lived a perfect life and that
he died on the cross to pay for my sins." Make sure that they
understand that those who believe this are given Heaven as a free
gift. This is what the Reformation was all about and this is what
we celebrate today on Reformation Sunday. This truth makes us
free!
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Open with a prayer that thanks God for reforming the church
and bringing it back to a correct understanding of the gospel.
