Unfunny laughter
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Ridicule is a form of social control.
Children can experience tremendous amounts of ridicule primarily
from peers. They may even endure ridicule for their faith. It
is good for them to know that Jesus was ridiculed and that he
understands and accepts us and that we need not have fear of
ridicule.
* Today's gospel is a double healing story of Jairus' daughter and the woman suffering from hemorrhage. Have someone from your church share the healing ministry of your congregation. You may have people involved in Stephen Ministries, a parish nurse program, prayer ministry, or other kinds of healing ministries that can connect the healing of Jesus with the church today.
* This gospel text lends itself to a mini-play staged by the children. A narrator can relate the story and the parts of Jesus, Peter, James, John, Jairus, his daughter, and the woman with the bleeding. Any leftover children can play the parts of the mourners turned to jeering laughers.
* Shame and ridicule can have devastating effects on children. Explore with the children ways they can prevent ridicule of others or themselves and how they can keep from ever laughing in ridicule at another.
* Have the pastor share with your children the process of healing involved in grief work.
* Make a tape of the children laughing the laughter of joy.
* Share stories the children find funny.
* Relating the text to life: Stinging words and laughter of ridicule can hurt a person on a deep level. The old rhyme that says, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me," is patently false. Jesus knows and understands ridicule.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Have a prayer for the healing ministries of the congregation.
* Have a special offering for a specific healing ministry.
