Upon this rock
Children's Activity
Object:
Today's reading introduces the word "church." One dictionary defines the word "church" as "the company of all Christians regarded as a mystic spiritual body." Until the Gospel of Matthew relays the conversation that Jesus has with Peter, the idea of this "mystic spiritual body" hadn't been offered.
What had to happen between Jesus and his followers in order for him to share this idea with them? Today's reading seems to imply that someone needed to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. The world had had lots of great teachers, but it had never had a messiah before. It was important that Jesus be recognized for who he really was. When Peter proclaims Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus states that this is the rock upon which the whole church will be built. Without this simple, yet complex, foundation, the church cannot stand. Everything rests on the foundation of acknowledging Jesus Christ as Messiah.
We used building blocks several weeks ago to demonstrate the difference between building on stable and unstable foundations. Revisit that discussion and use the blocks again today. Ask the children to build the highest tower possible using only one block for the base. Then build the tower again using several blocks to form a foundation.
All firm, strong structures require a firm, strong base beneath them. Even if something stands for a short while it will eventually collapse without something to hold it up. Jesus Christ is the Messiah and Savior of the world. Peter was the first to proclaim it, but many others have proclaimed it since. Everything that the Christian church has done has been built on that basic principle, and without it the church never would have been born.
