View from the manger
Children's sermon
Object:
objects from a manger scene (don't use wise men)
(Note: Before you begin your story, remove the figurines from
the manger scene. Lay them in a row so the children can see them.
Pick up the figurines as you tell their part of the story and
place them in the scene.)
Good evening, boys and girls. How many of you have a manger scene in your home? (Let them answer.) Some people call it a manger scene, others call it a crèche. Whatever you call it, it represents the people involved in the birth of Jesus. I imagine that you like to play with the pieces in the scene, don't you? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you the story of the birth of Jesus, by using the pieces in this manger scene.
Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mary was going to have a baby. Because all the rooms in hotels were full, Joseph stayed in a barn with animals. Jesus was born there that night. After he was born Mary placed him wrapped in cloth in a manger.
Shepherds were in the fields that night taking care of their sheep. Suddenly an angel appeared to the shepherds. The shepherds were afraid. The angel told them not to fear. The angel told them to go to Bethlehem. There they would find a baby wrapped in cloth lying in a manger.
The shepherds went to Bethlehem. They found baby Jesus. They told Mary and Joseph what the angel told them. All the people who heard the shepherd's story were amazed. The shepherds then returned to their fields. They praised God for everything that had happened.
That's the story of Jesus' birth from the gospel of Luke. I want you to remember this story, the next time you see a manger scene. Remember the angel, the shepherds, the animals, Mary and Joseph, the baby, and the manger where Jesus was lying when the shepherds found him.
