A voice in the wilderness
Children's sermon
Object:
an alarm clock
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought an alarm clock with me
this morning. How many of you wake up to an alarm clock in the
morning? (Let them answer.) How many of you are awakened by a
member of your family each morning? (Let them answer.) I want to
tell you the story of a boy about your age. Every morning his
older brother woke him up. The little boy did not like being
awakened by his older brother.
Here's what would happen each morning. The older brother would come into the boy's room. "Wake up! Get out of bed! Get ready for breakfast!" the older brother would say. Then the older brother would say, "It's time for you to change your ways. You have to start going to bed earlier so that you can get up earlier. Change your ways, starting today, little brother!" Has any of this ever happened to any of you? (Let them answer.)
This story reminds me of this morning's lesson. In the lesson a man named John started to walk around in the wilderness near Jordan River. He shouted to everyone who would listen. He told people that it was time to wake up and change their ways. "Get ready for the Lord," John would say.
Here's what I want you to remember this morning. John wasn't trying to wake people up from sleep. He was trying to tell them about God's son, Jesus. John knew that Jesus was coming soon. He was telling everyone to get ready for Jesus. This is the second Sunday of Advent. Advent is the season that we prepare for Jesus' coming. That's why my story this morning is about waking up and being ready.
The next time someone wakes you up in the morning, remember John. Remember that John was telling people to get ready for Jesus. Jesus is who we are waking up for in the season of Advent.
