Waiting for blessed hope
Children's sermon
Object:
a wrapped Christmas gift
Good morning (or evening), boys and girls. What's today (or
tonight)? (Let them answer.) It's Christmas morning (or eve). I
brought something that reminds me of Christmas. (Show the gift.)
It's a very important gift. How many of you are anxious to see
what might be in some of your Christmas presents under your tree?
(Let them answer.) You must wait until it is time to open them.
Is it difficult to watch those presents and wait for the time to
open them? (Let them answer.) Sometimes it seems that all we do
is wait. When it is finally time to open the presents it is a
wonderful time, isn't it? Waiting and hoping is one of the
important parts of Advent. We wait and wait. Finally Advent is
over. It is Christmas. Our lesson is from a very short book of
the Bible called Titus. It is so short that it only has three
very brief chapters. But, it is a very important book. It gives
Christians a very important message. That is why we often read
from Titus at Christmas time. Here's the message from Titus. "For
the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all,
training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the
present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright and
godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation
of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ."
Here's what I want you to remember about Titus and Christmas. Titus tells us to live lives that would make God feel good about us. Titus tells us to live these lives while we wait for Jesus to come. Titus tells us that Jesus is our hope and our savior. So, while you wait and wait to open your Christmas presents (hold up the present) remember that there is something else very important that we all wait for at Christmas. It is the arrival of Jesus, our savior.
