Waiting ... for hope
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas package with wrapping and bow
The time is close -- very close. Christmas is coming
tomorrow. All this Advent season we have been watching and
waiting. But the time is now near and Christmas Eve is here!
Some people open their gifts on Christmas Eve. How many of
you in your families have opened gifts? (Let them answer.)
Others might wait until after the Christmas Eve service. I
wonder how many of you will open gifts when you get home this
evening? (Let them answer.)
Still other families open gifts on
Christmas morning. Who among you will do that? (Let them
answer. You may also choose to share when you and your family
open gifts.)
I brought a Christmas gift with me tonight to show us what
it is like to wait and look forward to something good. I don't
know what is in this gift, but I know it is for me and I can't
wait to see what it is.
This Christmas gift is very much like our gift of faith.
God has given us a wonderful gift and his name is Jesus. Jesus
died and rose from the grave to give us a wonderful gift. That
gift is eternal life. That means that when our bodies die, we
will go to heaven to be with him. We don't yet know what the
gift will be like -- just as I don't have any idea what is in
this package. But this I know: the gift of heaven is a wonderful
gift.
The gift in this package may be a wonderful gift as well,
but no matter how wonderful it is or how wonderful any of my
Christmas gifts this year are, they are nothing compared to the
wonderful gift I have received from Jesus. Eternal life is mine!
I am so thankful to Jesus for giving me the best gift of all this
Christmas.
Dearest Lord Jesus: You have given us the gift of eternal life.
We have not yet unwrapped it, but we know it is a good gift.
Thank you. Amen.
