His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master." (v. 21)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we're going to talk about money. How many of you have received money -- maybe for a birthday, or an allowance, or for work you have done? (allow answers) What do you do with money that you receive? (allow answers) When we have money, there are several things we can do with it. We can spend money to buy things like ice cream or toys. We can give away money to the church or to other organizations. We can save money in a piggy bank or under our bed. Or we can invest money. Do any of you know what "invest" means? (allow answers) When we invest something, that means we spend it or give it to someone in hopes that we will get more money back. We can invest in a business: we can use money to open a business or create things and then resell them to make money back. We can invest money in the bank or in the stock market. Banks and the stock market borrow our money and pay us for it. They pay us for the ability to borrow it -- so we get back more money than we had at the beginning.
Investing money is a good way to use the money that we have. In fact, our gospel lesson today talks about investing. The story in the gospel is about a man who gives each of his servants some money. Two of the servants invest the money and make more money. But one servant hides the money -- buries it in the ground so that no one can steal it. But by burying it, he cannot use it to make more money.
When the man who had given them the money came back, the servants brought him their money. The master was very happy with the two servants who had invested their money. He knew that if he could trust them with something small, like investing money, he could trust them with bigger projects. They would do good work for him.
The master was angry with the servant who had not invested his money. The master saw that this servant was lazy. He did not do good work for his master. Instead of working to invest the money, he just buried it. He didn't want to take the risk or do the work to make good choices with his master's money.
The gospel isn't just talking about money, though. God wants us to do good work with all our gifts -- not just money. What are some other gifts that God gives us? (allow answers) God gives each of us special talents and resources that we can invest to make a difference in other peoples' lives. This week look for ways that you can invest your own gifts from God so that you can make a difference. Amen.
