Was, is, will be
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible, a diary, and a key
I heard a little poem that tells about God and tells about you
and me. It goes like this:
Life is a book in volumes three.
The past, the present, and the yet to be.
The past is finished, and laid away.
The present we are living day to day.
The third and last of volumes three --
Is locked from sight and God has the key.
I don't know who wrote that little poem but it speaks about you and me and God.
I brought with me a book (pull out the Bible). What is this book? ... That's right! This is a Bible. It tells of what God has done with God's people in the past. This is good to know, but it is not all there is to know. Just because God was with people in the past means nothing to me unless God is with us in the present -- right now.
(Pull out the diary.) This book is a diary. A diary is a book that a person keeps to write about her or his life. It tells about what is happening RIGHT NOW. Just as God was in the past with God's people, so God is with God's people NOW. God is here now, in this place -- with you and with me. That's great news.
(Show them the key.) There is a third book that the poem says is hidden away. This key indicates that that book is locked away. The book I am speaking about is the book about the future. Just as God was with God's people in the past and with us now, so God will be with us in the future -- all the way through this life and even into death. That is really great news!
We call this good news our hope. This hope is the promise Jesus left us long ago. It is a hope that is real.
